New Year Wrap-Up and Interior Design Trends of 2024

As we say goodbye to 2023 and hello to the New Year, we’re sharing the interior design trends of 2023 that we saw, and offering our expert predictions for what will be popular in the world of home design in 2024.

Interior Designer Trends of 2023:

1. Walk-In Laundry Rooms:

In 2023, the idea of walk-in laundry rooms gained momentum. No longer a cramped closet, homeowners began dedicating a space to expansive, organized laundry rooms that combine functionality with aesthetic appeal.

We were thrilled to incorporate this concept into our design portfolio, enhancing these spaces with bold cabinetry, eye-catching wallpaper, and essential additions like single bowl sinks and practical storage solutions.

2. Terracotta Tiles:

Terracotta tiles made a comeback in 2023, adding warmth and earthy charm to interior spaces. These tiles come in various shapes, sizes, and patterns, and found their way into kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, walls, and floors.

One standout project from this year was our restoration of the Van Wezel residence, where we seamlessly the original Saltillo tiles with Saltillo terracotta tiles for the home's expansion. Paw prints were added to the tiles for a personalized touch - we were in love!

3. Sustainable Furniture:

With the growing emphasis on environmental sustainability, eco-friendly furniture made significant strides in 2023. Pieces crafted from reclaimed and responsibly sourced materials gained widespread popularity.

We stand for this trend! Here at HSH Collective, we love supporting local and use reclaimed materials, and adding some antiques and performance furniture to serve up that one-of-a-kind, authentic look.

And here's the latest scoop: big spending isn't about chasing trends anymore. People are all about functional furniture, so we're turning non-functional pieces into decor game-changers like pillows, trinkets, and more.

4. Return of Wallpaper:

Wallpaper, long considered outdated, experienced a resurgence in 2023. Modern wallpapers feature bold patterns and textures, opening an array of possibilities to elevate any room.

We’re fully on board this trend, adding wallpaper in a variety of spaces. A favorite of ours, is Philip Jeffries’ wallpaper, in any and every area from closets and pantries to bedrooms and living rooms. More wallpaper and fewer accent walls became the 2023’s mantra.

5. Out with the Bright Whites, In with the Warm Whites:

The crisp, bright whites that dominated interior design for years started to take a backseat in 2023. Warm whites, with undertones of beige, cream, or light gray, took center stage and provided a cozier and more inviting atmosphere.

Our favorite paint choices were Simply White OC-117 and Classic Grey OC-23 by Benjamin Moore! As the year comes to a close, we’ve delved into the warm with Swiss Coffee - OC 45 being a top recommendation. This shade perfectly complements the tropical surroundings of our clients on Anna Maria Island.

2024 Interior Design Trends We’re Seeing:

1. Curves in Furniture:

In 2024, expect to see more furniture pieces with soft, curved lines. Curved elements in pieces like couches, mirrors, end tables, ottomans, and coffee tables will cultivate a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in a departure from rigid, straight lines.

2. Reclaimed Woods / Mixing Woods:

The appeal of reclaimed and mixed wood finishes is expected to flourish next year. Combining various wood types and finishes that will add character and a rustic touch to interiors.

This is a trend we're wholeheartedly excited about, as it aligns perfectly with our existing design philosophy of incorporating reclaimed and mixed wood in everything from headboards and dressers to picture frames, desks, and decorative open shelving.

3. Continued Warm Colors:

Warm color palettes, including creamy whites, tans, and browns, will continue to be a driving force in interior design, fostering a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

We are ending 2023 strong and starting the new year with warm hues of creamy whites, tans, and soft yellows on the walls and furniture pieces. This brings warmth to any space, but don’t worry, the early 2000s are not calling, there are no predictions to bring back the mustard-yellow walls…at least not yet.

4. Less Trends, More Antiques:

Homeowners are expected to favor personalization and unique, antique pieces over the latest design trends. This shift encourages individuality and a timeless aesthetic.

Antiques have always held a special place in our hearts, appreciate the uniqueness and history each piece brings to a space.

Recently, Jessica Holiday, the owner and founder of HSH Collective, had the pleasure of supporting her husband at the Roundtop Antique Fair in Texas, where he showcased his most cherished collection pieces.

We love adding classic items with a modern twist, and we specialize in finding just what our clients have been searching for in their homes.

5. The Rise of Blues:

Following the lead of major paint companies, soft blues, indigos, and blue greens are poised to dominate interior design in 2024. In particular, Sherman Williams' color Upward SW 6239 is expected to be a defining trend in the coming year.

We love this coming in trend, especially for our beach rental properties! Bring on the ocean and sky hues in your home. Blue’s also relate to tranquility and calmness which is definitely a feeling of home whether it’s in the kitchen, bedroom, or bathroom. In 2023, one of our favorite projects featured a blue shiplap in the primary suite, combining coastal and calming elements.

Stay tuned for 2024, as we explore blues on front doors, outdoor cabinetry, and more in our projects.

6. Textures on Walls:

Expect to see a surge in textured wall treatments. Textured paints, wallpapers, and 3D wall panels will add depth and intrigue to interiors, creating a tactile and visually stimulating environment.

In a recent project, we introduced textured walls extending from the living room up the stairs, making a bold statement and offering an alternative to traditional wallpaper (pictures to come!). We also love wall paneling from shiplap to board and batten treatments, providing depth and character to various spaces.

As we reflect on the interior design trends of 2023 and look forward to 2024, it's clear that interior design is evolving towards a more diverse and individualized direction.

Homeowners are seeking a balance between timeless elements and unique personal touches, resulting in spaces that not only please the eye but also add to their personality.

We’re excited to embrace these trends and predictions to create homes that resonate with your personal style in the upcoming year. Cheers to the new year, contact us today with your upcoming project for 2024!
