How to Choose the Perfect Color for Your Living Room

How to choose the perfect color for your living room

Whether you are doing a complete home redesign or you are looking to freshen up your space, the color you choose for your walls plays a large role in the look and feel of your home. It can be an overwhelming task when there are seemingly endless colors to choose from. We’ve compiled our top five tips to help ease the stress and get you the living room of your dreams.

01. Think Big Picture

Thinking about the long-term life of your room is the perfect place to start before the color selection begins. Bold, bright, and dramatic colors are on trend and fun for a season, but they can be overwhelming, quickly fall out of style, or worse, clash with that brand new sofa you’ve been swooning over forever. We steer our clients toward warm, neutral hues, which allow your furniture and decor to make a statement. Contrary to what you might be thinking, neutral colors don’t have to be boring!

02. Source Inspiration

We love a good mood board, especially one filled with all of your dream home goals. There are so many resources at your fingertips for inspiration and examples. Design magazines are full of up-to-date trends in home decor and design with beautifully photographed spaces. Subscribe, snip some photos out, and create a physical mood board to help guide your decorating process. If you prefer to keep things digital, Pinterest is flooded with beautiful photos and posts with links directly to the products in the photos.

03. Get Feedback

It can be easy to get in your head and overthink every little detail about your interior design project. When this happens, we recommend taking a breath, picking up the phone, and calling someone you trust. Maybe it is a friend, a family member, or your Interior Designer. Share your options and ideas and get feedback from a trusted source, ideally, someone who understands you and your style. It is always helpful to have a fresh set of eyes when you feel unsure and you’ve been staring at the same paint swatches for days. Always remember, it’s just paint. You can always paint the room again!

04. Try it Out

If you are floating between a couple of options, but don’t want to commit to one just yet, buy a sample size of the colors and test them out. This step is absolutely essential! Trust us when we say that paint looks different on your walls than it does on a swatch.

Give yourself a couple of big sections around the room to work with, at least 1ft x 1ft, and do two coats to make it as close to the finished product as possible. Paint the different shades side by side so you can easily compare. We recommend studying them throughout the day and into the evening so you can see how the different light affects the colors. We even recommend testing your favorite samples on multiple walls. Each wall will get different light throughout the day and have a completely different look and feel. Having the samples around the room will give you a feel for how the colors play with light, the furniture, and the decor. It can be helpful to live in the space for a day or two to see how the colors work with your vision and what will be the perfect finishing touch.

05. Hire an Interior Designer
