How to Find the Perfect Rug for Your Dining Room

Dining rooms are the perfect place to get creative with your decor. We love making dining rooms warm, cozy, and an all-around enjoyable place to spend time. Rugs are one of the many ways to make your space feel more homey and complete. Since your dining room is a place where you frequently gather with friends and family, it’s important to make sure it aligns with your particular design preferences and needs. Keep reading to learn some quick tips to keep in mind when choosing a rug for your dining room.

Darker Colors are Typically Best

Although we love how crisp and clean white rugs look, they typically aren’t the best choice for a dining room. There are bound to be some messes or spills during family dinner or drinks with friends and you don’t want to constantly worry about your rug getting stained or damaged. Darker rugs are far better at disguising any messes which makes for a simpler, low-maintenance option.

Base The Shape on Your Table

Since your dining table is the focal point of your dining room, it is wise to choose a rug that matches both the style of your table and the dining room. Whether your table is square, rectangular, or oval different rugs will suit different tables best. For example, if your table is rectangular, it likely makes the most sense to go with a rectangular rug to ensure it aligns with the shape and size of your table.

Consider Texture

Soft, fluffy rugs can be the perfect way to make a room feel warm and cozy, but unfortunately, they just aren’t cut out for high-traffic areas like your dining room. High-pile shag rugs are difficult to clean and are more likely to hold onto stains from things like food and drinks. We recommend a smooth, low-shag rug for the easiest cleanup. Although these rugs may not be as soft and luxurious, trust us, you’ll thank yourself for choosing the low-maintenance option in the long run. If you are looking for a more natural look, consider choosing a natural fiber, jute rug. These rugs age well and add a focal point to your dining room without making the space look too busy.

Introduce Some Color

Like we always say, don’t be afraid to go bold! This tip also holds true in dining rooms. Dining rooms typically feature very neutral furnishings but it’s important to introduce some color into your space in at least a few ways. One simple way to do this is by adding a unique colorful rug to the mix.

Don’t Go Too Large

While the dining room seems like the perfect place to add a large, extravagant rug, it can actually be incredibly overwhelming to the design of your room. Dining rooms are typically on the smaller side, so you want to stick to a moderate-sized rug. As a general rule of thumb, your rug should be large enough that if you pull your chair away from the table, the chair is still on the carpet, but there is no need to go much larger than that. Be sure to measure your space before deciding on a rug. This will ensure that you choose a rug that is the optimal size for your space.

Rugs are a great way to dress up your dining room and add a creative touch. Our biggest tip is not to overthink it! As long as you follow basic shape and size standards, the rest is really up to you. Consider what designs, colors, and textures work best with your lifestyle and you’re bound to have a great end result and a dining room you can’t wait to show off.
