How to Choose Art for Your Home

The process of choosing artwork for your space can be daunting. It can feel like both a blessing and a curse to have so many options and styles to choose from. We are here to help you break down the process which we hope will aid in this decision making process! Unlike other design changes, artwork is easy to update. There is no reason to stray away from something new or different! All it takes is a little time and patience, noting the choices you’ve already made in your home and building in the opportunity to get creative!

Determine the Location

First things first. What room are you choosing artwork for, and what is its primary function? For an example, if you're choosing artwork for a nursery, it may look different than a print you would choose for your own room. Answer questions like, what colors and textures already exist in this room? how large is the wallspace?, What other objects will be surrounding this piece? Noting these details and paying attention to what is already happening will make sure that the artwork you choose will fit perfectly into your space when it arrives.

Identify the wall space where the artwork will hang, considering size and placement, once again noting what you have planned for the surrounding space. Are you planning a gallery wall or a single, statement piece? What about two large collages on opposing walls? It can help to have a sheet of paper or a piece of cardboard the size of your soon to be chosen artwork, to hold up and easily envision how much room the artwork will take up.

Identify Your Preferred Style

Next, choose the artwork style you are drawn to, whether it’s abstract painting, bold prints, graphic imagery, or bold lettering. What styles and elements of artwork that you would like to hang in your home? If this task feels overwhelming, start by noting the styles you wouldn’t want, narrowing in on what you DO love! Leafing through design magazines, spending time on Pinterest, and seeing what other friends or shops are hanging up in their spaces can help inspire and help you visualize what looks strong.

Select & Purchase

Now comes the fun part, buying and shopping for your artwork! One of our favorite things to do is find local artists who create gorgeous pieces that resonate with where your home is located. So many of our clients are on Anna Maria Island and surrounding Florida beaches. Finding artists that create stunning pieces that have a beachy feel is always a great way to fill client homes. Ask around to friends, who may have friends that make the artwork style you are looking for. It can be fun to visit local galleries, or spots when you’re traveling next to ensure you are hanging something unique and special in your refreshed room!

Don’t let hanging art in your home overwhelm you to the point of leaving your walls empty! Start small by researching styles you love. Looking for a team to help redesign your home? Click here to contact the HSH Collective team.
