Florida Houseplants: The Best Options for a Sunny Home

Here in Florida, our weather looks a little different than most of the country and as a result, the plants we keep in our homes do too. At HSH Designs, we are big believers in the need to add natural elements and greenery into your home. That is why we have created a guide to the best houseplants for Florida residents. Here are four leafy greens that enjoy direct and indirect sunlight and do well in humid temperatures, as well as a few ways to display them.

Boston fern on a rattan plant stand

No.1 Boston Fern

This is a fern that thrives in humid conditions and prefers bright, filtered light. They are great to hang from a beam or the ceiling and give off such a whimsical and bohemian look. They are also known to help filter the air of any toxins or chemicals, which is often why people have them in their homes. The long feathery leaves look great up against harder materials like any leather seating, sharper marble counters or tile, or sitting on a wood or tile floor. Contrast is everything!

Bamboo palm plant

No.2 Bamboo Palm

This is such a fun palm to have in your home or even right outside your door to greet guests. It has a variety of green shades shown on its leaves which really gives it that jungle-y aspect we love! Plants help bring life to your space and this gorgeous palm does exactly that, especially as it grows. Be sure to place it in a space where it has the opportunity to grow. The bamboo palm flourishes in cool, humid climates and prefers bright, indirect sunlight.

Snake plant

No.3 Snake Plant

This plan is famous for helping filter the air and removing toxins that can be harmful to our skin and lungs. It is super easy to keep alive-just water when the soil is completely dry and kept away from direct sunlight. This is a great plant to start with if you’re a first-time buyer, they aren’t too finicky and bring a lot of color and sculpture to the space! Placing this next to a striped rug can bring out the patterns in the plant, so keep that in mind when trying to figure out your placement.

Succulent in wooden pot

No.4 Succulents

The succulent is another easy-going plant that won’t require too much attention. Water these guys whenever they start to feel dry and keep them in a shallow dish or bowl. These look great up against stone, so you can either place small stones in the bowl with the succulents or place them on a marble or granite countertop to get the look. We like to add these on top of a stack of books or even as a centerpiece in the middle of a table. As you might have guessed, there is no incorrect placement for a succulent.

How Should I Pot My Plants?

Following the direction on the tag when you purchase your plants is of course step one! Make sure you read what kind of sunlight it likes, and place it near or window or further, accordingly. The part we enjoy is finding the perfect pot, especially when you can choose a bold, boho, ceramic pot. Above we have two examples of how you can style your plant, with other decor pieces on a coffee table, or standing alone as a statement in the corner. Larger plants look good on their own, whereas smaller ones that wouldn't go past your knees can be placed on tables for added decor. Get creative with what you place your plants in, using baskets for added texture! Have fun and embrace your green thumb, everyone has one!
