Tips for Shelf Styling

We’ve all spent enough time in our homes, looking at the same decor. You might be feeling that you feel the need to breathe a little life back into your space. Redecorating or adding shelves is a fun way to spruce things up! We’ve compiled a guide with our favorite tips and tricks to ease your stress and simplify your shelf-decorating journey.

Shelf Styling Tips

Add Greenery

Bringing the outdoors in is one of our favorite ways to add life into your home. Mixing in a few plants adds texture, variety, and life to otherwise boring and mismatched shelves. The best part of plants is there is so much natural diversity, from a statement palm frond to fresh-cut tulips to a simple succulent. It’s also an easy way to incorporate a pop of color and seasonal elements. Don’t have a green thumb? Don’t worry! Faux plants can look just as beautiful as the real thing.

Use Hardcover Books for Vintage Flare

Not only will your guests be impressed by your intellectual interest in vintage literature, they will also be stunned at the beauty it adds to your shelf. Hardcover books are an elegant way to add height and texture to your shelves, with the bonus potential of being functional as well.

Display Meaningful Photos

Displaying meaningful touches will transform your house into your home. It’s a great way to keep memories alive, while also bringing life to your shelf decor. Leaning the frames or canvases on the shelves saves your walls from the holes of many attempts at getting the nails in just right. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so why not make those words about what’s most important to you?

Balance, Symmetry, and Color

If you haven’t noticed yet, we love adding variety and pops of color to the spaces we decorate. However, we don’t want your shelves to become distracting with too many mismatched elements or too much color. Symmetry doesn’t have to mean an exact copy/paste from one half to the other. The key is balancing out the details from one side to the other, creating the same visual weight and appearance on both halves. Too much color can also throw off your shelves, but the balance can be restored by replacing a few loud pieces with more neutral ones.

Support Local Artists

We are all about supporting local artists and small businesses. Displaying local art is a great way to match the vibe of your town with the style of your home. Art always sparks conversation, so having a local artist behind the story adds a personal element. One of the best parts of including art in your design is the ability to mix and match. Buy a few pieces from the same artist or shop around to cultivate your collection from different artists.
