Headboards: How to Determine the Right Style for Your Room

There are certain pieces of furniture that can really elevate a room, regardless of their price or the brand. Headboards are one of those objects that make a statement and can turn an average bedroom into a sophisticated and elegant space. How to choose the right style comes down to noticing what the room can allow. This will determine the size, proportions, and design details to look for when shopping for your headboard. Below are 5 styles that we have chosen that each adds a unique and upscale feeling to the room.

Coastal bedroom with woven headboard

Natural

This bohemian but chic headboard offers a strong look that is able to hold both neutral or patterned bedding, as its lighter color won't fight against either. This is a great style that will last for years to come. The caning, lighter wood, and more square angles capture a mid-century modern feeling, a look, and aesthetic that never ages. As mentioned it's important to keep in mind what bedding you plan to pair with the headboard you are shopping for. You want to ensure that if you are planning on switching out bedding, the headboard allows for versatility. In this case, the lighter wood compliments the light sheets, and the chunkier blanket allows contrast well with the smaller texture seen in the caning. Balance is always on the mind!

Timeless metal headboard

Timeless

A classic headboard is a metal/or iron frame that can shift and work into many design styles. The one pictured above encapsulates a nautical feeling with its white glossy paint and simple lines. Other versions of this more architectural aesthetic can take on a more romantic feeling. Oftentimes popular in black or brown metal that is curved into shapes that take on a more Victorian look. This design is perfect for smaller rooms that don’t have the capacity to take on stronger or larger furniture. Its simple lines and larger openings will still allow light to pass through and will make the overall room feel more open, rather than closed off. A great design that can be easily adapted into many styles!

Beds against a slatted wood wall

Rustic

While this is not technically a headboard, it can act as one! Using a wall covered in wood slats, not only looks unique and rustic but can act as both an alternative to a paint color and a headboard. This is also a great solution if you have two larger beds in one room, and want that sophisticated upgrade of the look and feel of headboards but perhaps don’t have the space for two of them. This gives a room such a warm touch and can be done for a reasonable price. DIY or ask a professional, we will leave that decision up to you!

Modern headboard as a furniture piece

Modern

This unique headboard works in two ways! One side has built-in side tables and lamps, while the other side functions as a vanity with a mirror and drawers. As seen above it floats in the middle of the room and almost adds the feeling of more privacy while still keeping the floorplan open. This is a great option if the room doesn't have a grounding wall to set the bed up against. It is modern and sleek and the perfect way to knock two birds with one stone!

Elegant headboard against a shiplap bedroom wall

Elegant

It wouldn’t be a headboard blog without talking about the dreamy canopy bed. Pictured is an updated, bold and minimalistic approach to one of the most timeless furniture designs. Oftentimes we think of this type of frame to only work in romantic more feminine rooms, but a simple wooden structure without fabric or curtains is a great way to neutralize the aesthetic. If you are feeling daring, and ready to add a bold touch to your bedroom it may be time to find the canopy style that works for you.
