How to Choose the Right Flooring for Your Beach Home

Hey there! At HSH Collective Home and Design, we’re all about making your home on Anna Maria Island look amazing. One of the most important design decisions you can make on your home is the flooring! It’s not just about looks, it’s also about making sure your floors can handle whatever beach life throws at them.

We’re sharing the most popular types of beach house flooring we’ve seen in home installations all around Anna Maria Island to help you choose the best and most durable one for your place. Let’s begin!

Exploring Different Flooring Types:

There are three types of flooring ideas you'll see in homes near the beach, there’s hardwood flooring, ceramic tile, and laminate flooring. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, and we’re here to spill the tea!

Hardwood Flooring:

  • Pros:

    • Hardwood flooring is timeless! It will never go out of style, it’s versatile for any room of the home, and its warm tones add a cozy feel to any space.

  • Cons:

    • Maintenance is key with these floors! They are known to get scratched easily and have water damage if not properly maintained. We recommend these floors on 2nd story spaces and above. Just in case there is ever any flooding to the home due to high tide or storms.

  • Best for:

    • As we stated in the pros, hardwood floors are versatile! They can be used throughout the home in living rooms, bedrooms, the kitchen, the den, you name it!

Ceramic Tile:

  • Pros:

    • Ceramic tile is known for its durability, and many are known for being scratch-resistant. It also holds up well with water and the design options are endless! This is a great option for full-time residencies and vacation rental homes.

  • Cons:

    • The downside to ceramic tile is minimal! They will be cold to walk on at times, mainly during cooler weather, but add a couple of well-placed area rugs and the heat of Florida’s sun, and these tiles will easily solve that issue. Another thing to consider is that they can be tricky to install, but no worries, our dedicated vendors are ready to help!

  • Best for:

    • tile can be used throughout the whole home, especially in high-traffic areas, bathrooms, and kitchens!

Laminate Flooring:

  • Pros:

    • Laminate flooring has become very popular recently, thanks to its budget-friendly price tag and straightforward installation process. It's also known for its resistance to scratches and fading, though it's still a good idea to use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent any mishaps.

These features make laminate a top choice in our rental designs because it strikes the perfect balance between affordability and durability.

  • Cons:

    • These floors can be easily damaged from moisture and offer a less authentic feel compared to hardwood. If your budget allows for it, we highly recommend investing in hardwood floors.

  • Best for:

    • Place laminate in areas with moderate to high-foot traffic like throughout a rental property or any bedroom.

Why You Should Refrain from Carpet:

Living in Florida and designing lots of beach houses, we know the deal. Sand and saltwater are great outside but not so much inside.

Not only can water cause mildew and mold under the carpet, but salt water specifically ruins it faster and has a stronger odor. It also can attract more dirt when walked on!

By skipping carpets, your home will remain as clean and pristine as the day it was designed, with less maintenance on your part.
