Finding the Perfect Rug for Your Space

Every room in your home has a purpose. Certain spaces are more focused on function, while others are designed to help you relax. The details and design elements within these spaces work together to create an overall atmosphere and aesthetic that emphasize that room's primary function. A detail like a rug is an easy way to quickly adjust a room from functional to cozy. Today on the blog we will be noting five different spaces and the perfect type of rug for each one!

Kitchen

Starting from the most functional space and ending with the most relaxing, we begin with the kitchen. Pending the size of your kitchen, the shape won't matter as much whereas overall texture and material will. You will want to ensure that the rug you choose will be comfortable and padded enough for standing on while dishwashing or cooking, but also industrial enough that if spilled on, the fabric is easy to clean or wipe up. Choose a kitchen rug that is either a low-pile, flatweave, or braided rug. Better yet, choose a rug initially designed to be outdoors, as it will inevitably be incredibly durable, water-resistant, and easy to clean!

Bathroom Rug

A second space in your home where a washable rug is best is the bathroom. Smaller rugs with fabrics that are closer to terrycloth and are water absorbent will be the best type for this room. If your bathroom is larger, choose 2 or 3 spaces where a rug will fit, to ensure that the sink, shower, and bathtub each have a soft and cushioned surface nearby. Rugs in this room can also be a great way to add a splash of color. A few different patterns will add a bold pop but won’t interfere with the designs in the rest of your house.

Hallway

The type of rug you will need in your hallway is most commonly a long runner, or something thinner that's easy to walk on. This is a place in your home that will see lots of foot traffic. You will need a rug that is durable and comfortable. Similar to the bathroom space, a hallway can be another pocket of your home that can handle a bold design choice. A long antique runner that holds lots of different colors is a great option, or a cozier shaggy runner can add texture and dimension to another nondescript area of the home. Above all else, ensure that a hallway rug feels nice to walk on!

Living Room

Now we’re ready for that large area rug you’ve been eyeing! The living room is one of the most flexible spaces in terms of what material of rug is best, but the biggest aspect to take into consideration is the size. A small rug won't be able to pull in and support all of your furniture and can often leave the overall look of the room incomplete. It’s also best to center your couch with the rug, as the rug is most often the biggest design element in the room, and when that is off-balanced the rest of the room will follow.

Bedroom

A bedroom is one of the more uncommon spaces we think about when adding a rug because it's often already carpeted. However, a rug can act as a room separator, anchoring the bed and bedside tables, giving the overall room a larger feel. The type of rug to choose is the coziest you can find of course, while still noting the design details that already are occurring around the room. If the bedroom is lacking color, add a rug that brings in bright hues. If a room is without textural elements, look for a rug that is thicker or plusher. If you need the rug to anchor and blend in with the carpet due to other design elements already taking center stage-then find one that fits right in with the rest of the room. The most important part of your bedroom rug is comfort and balance.
